Description

Historical and theoretical survey of the evolution of human rights are discussed. This course attempts to define health and health care in the context of human rights theory and practice The course gives an overview of the ethical and human rights implications of recent advances in the life and biomedical sciences from multiple religious and cultural perspectives. The course also discusses international and regional human rights law and specialized topics include corporate social responsibility, children and women’s human rights.

Objectives

• By the end of the course students will be able to: a. Knowledge and Understanding a.1. Identify the major international declarations and treaties governing human rights with emphasis on those applied in cases of international disasters and pandemics. a.2. Recognize the main articles in the universal declaration of human rights including “Right to Equality”, “Freedom from Discrimination”, and “Right to Life, Liberty, and Personal Security”. a.3. Recognize the right for privacy and confidentiality of personal information as one of the human rights. a.4. Recognize the importance of Demonstrating care and sympathy towards the patient as one of his human rights. a.5. Define conflict of interest and its legal consequences in different settings using case study examples. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Identify appropriate interventions to address illegal, unethical or unprofessional actions and situations in practice c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Apply ethical principles in the decision-making process without any discrimination concerning religion, sex or ethnic groups using case study examples. d. General and Transferable Skills d.1. Conduct research to find human rights materials and relevant issues with emphasis on those applied in health care systems.
