  • is course is an introductory course for the students to understand the morphological structure of the wood in nature, especially the ancient wood types used in the through the different historical periods. Students will understand the natural defects of wood and its classification, in addition to the knowledge of the applied arts in which wood was used in the past and how to choose the good types of wood and suitable for wood restoration and conservation of archaeology. The course will also provide the student with the manual skills needed in the carpentry arts of several types, whether by drilling, forming, or grafting, knowledge of wood drilling and shaping tools and how to use these different resources for research. The students will receive proper instruction on the diverse types of woodwork such as wood bearing colour layer, wood covered with gypsum layer such as the Fayoum Portraits and learn about the deterioration factors that affect the archaeological wood such as physical, chemical, weathering, mechanical, and biological as well as the deterioration to waterlogged wooden. The course also analyses methods of restoration and conservation of wood works, through the traditional and advanced methods of cleaning archaeology wood through mechanical and chemical consolidation of wood floors and colour layer. Finally, students will be instructed on the latest scientific methods in the museum exhibitions, and museum storage of wooden artefacts..
