This course provides an advanced examination of the maritime economy and its role in global trade, economic development, and the Blue Economy. It covers the economic structure and performance of major maritime sectors, including shipping, ports, maritime transport, logistics, shipbuilding, marine services, and ocean-based industries. Topics include maritime trade and markets, shipping economics, port economics, freight rates, costs and revenues, investment analysis, competitiveness, market dynamics, and maritime policy. The course also examines emerging issues such as digitalization, decarbonization, climate change, sustainable finance, and the transition toward a sustainable Blue Economy. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain advanced concepts and principles related to maritime economics. Analyze the economic structure and performance of major maritime and ocean-based industries. Assess factors influencing maritime trade, shipping markets, freight rates, and port competitiveness. Apply economic concepts and analytical tools to maritime investment and management decisions. Evaluate the economic impacts of maritime policies, regulations, and global market developments. Analyze emerging challenges and opportunities related to digitalization, sustainability, and decarbonization. Assess the role of the maritime economy in supporting sustainable development and the Blue Economy. Objectives

  • To provide students with an advanced understanding of the principles, structure, and dynamics of the maritime economy. To examine the economic role of maritime transport, ports, shipping, logistics, marine resources, and other ocean-based industries in global and regional development. To develop students’ ability to analyze maritime markets, trade patterns, costs, revenues, competitiveness, and investment decisions. To explore contemporary economic challenges and opportunities affecting the maritime sector, including globalization, digitalization, sustainability, and climate change. To introduce advanced concepts and analytical tools for evaluating maritime policies, investments, and economic performance. To enable students to develop strategic and sustainable approaches to addressing complex economic issues in the maritime and Blue Economy sectors.
