Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles and applications of remote sensing for the observation, monitoring, and analysis of the Earth's surface and environment. It covers the electromagnetic spectrum, remote sensing platforms, sensors, satellite imagery, aerial photography, and data acquisition techniques. Students will explore basic image processing, enhancement, interpretation, classification, and change detection methods. The course also examines applications of remote sensing in environmental monitoring, land-use mapping, coastal zone management, marine resource assessment, pollution detection, disaster monitoring, and sustainable resource management. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and concepts of remote sensing. Identify different types of remote sensing platforms, sensors, and data sources. Describe the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and Earth's surface features. Interpret basic satellite and aerial imagery. Apply basic image processing and classification techniques. Use remotely sensed data for mapping, environmental monitoring, and change detection. Evaluate the applications of remote sensing in marine, coastal, and environmental management. Apply remote sensing techniques to support decision-making and sustainable resource management.

Objectives

  • To provide students with a fundamental understanding of the principles, concepts, and applications of remote sensing. To introduce the main types of remote sensing platforms, sensors, and electromagnetic spectrum interactions used for Earth and environmental observation. To develop students’ understanding of satellite, aerial, and other remotely sensed data acquisition and interpretation. To introduce basic techniques for image processing, classification, and spatial analysis. To develop students’ ability to use remote sensing data for environmental monitoring, mapping, and resource assessment. To enable students to apply remote sensing techniques to marine, coastal, environmental, and land-based applications.
