Description

This course introduces the principles and practices of sustainable marine environment management. It examines marine ecosystems, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the major environmental pressures affecting marine and coastal areas. Topics include marine pollution, climate change, habitat degradation, biodiversity loss, overexploitation of marine resources, and coastal development. The course also explores ecosystem-based management, marine conservation, marine protected areas, environmental monitoring, sustainable resource use, environmental governance, and policy frameworks. Emphasis is placed on balancing environmental protection with economic and social development within the context of the Sustainable Blue Economy. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the principles and importance of sustainable marine environmental management. Identify major threats and pressures affecting marine and coastal ecosystems. Analyze the ecological, social, and economic consequences of marine environmental degradation. Apply ecosystem-based approaches to marine environmental management. Evaluate conservation and sustainable resource-management strategies. Assess the role of environmental monitoring, policies, and governance in protecting marine environments. Propose appropriate strategies for reducing environmental impacts and enhancing ecosystem resilience. Apply sustainable management principles to real-world marine and coastal environmental challenges.
