Description

This course introduces the principles and practices of marine accident investigation. It covers the investigation of maritime accidents and incidents involving vessels, personnel, machinery, cargo, navigation, and marine operations. Topics include accident classification, evidence collection, interviews, documentation, data analysis, causal analysis, human factors, risk assessment, and root-cause analysis. The course also examines the preparation of investigation reports, safety recommendations, and corrective actions aimed at preventing the recurrence of similar accidents and improving maritime safety. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and objectives of marine accident investigation. Identify and classify different types of marine accidents and incidents. Describe the main procedures for collecting and preserving accident evidence. Analyze technical, human, environmental, and organizational factors contributing to marine accidents. Apply basic methods for causal and root-cause analysis. Conduct a structured investigation of a simulated or real-world marine accident scenario. Prepare a clear and structured marine accident investigation report. Develop appropriate safety recommendations and corrective measures to prevent accident recurrence.
