This course introduces the principles and practices of machinery surveying, with emphasis on the inspection, assessment, testing, and maintenance of marine machinery and equipment. It covers major shipboard systems, including main and auxiliary engines, pumps, boilers, compressors, propulsion systems, steering systems, and other mechanical equipment. Students will learn about survey procedures, condition monitoring, defect identification, testing methods, maintenance practices, safety requirements, and technical reporting. The course also addresses relevant regulations, classification requirements, and the role of machinery surveys in ensuring vessel safety, reliability, and operational efficiency. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and purposes of machinery surveying. Identify the main types and components of marine machinery and equipment. Describe standard inspection, testing, and condition-assessment procedures. Identify common machinery defects, failures, and maintenance requirements. Assess the operational condition and potential risks associated with marine machinery. Apply appropriate safety procedures during machinery inspection and surveying. Prepare and interpret basic machinery survey and inspection reports. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of machinery surveying in ensuring vessel safety, reliability, and efficient operation.
