Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of naval architecture and ship stability. It covers the main aspects of ship design and construction, including hull geometry, ship dimensions, displacement, buoyancy, weight distribution, centers of gravity and buoyancy, and hydrostatic characteristics. The course also examines different types of ship stability, including initial, transverse, and longitudinal stability, as well as trim and the effects of loading and environmental conditions on vessel behavior. Emphasis is placed on applying basic stability principles to ensure ship safety, seaworthiness, and operational performance. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles of naval architecture and ship stability. Identify the main components and geometric characteristics of a ship. Explain the concepts of displacement, buoyancy, center of gravity, and center of buoyancy. Perform basic calculations related to hydrostatics and ship stability. Analyze the effects of loading and weight distribution on ship stability and trim. Assess basic transverse and longitudinal stability conditions. Identify factors that may affect vessel safety and seaworthiness. Apply fundamental naval architecture and stability principles to practical ship design and operational scenarios.

To develop students’ understanding of the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic principles governing ship behavior. To examine the factors affecting the stability, trim, and seaworthiness of vessels. To develop students’ ability to perform basic calculations related to buoyancy, displacement, center of gravity, and ship stability. To enable students to assess stability conditions and apply appropriate principles to improve ship safety and performance.
