Description

This course introduces the principles, operation, and applications of surveying instruments used in land, engineering, geodetic, and marine surveying. It covers traditional and modern instruments, including levels, theodolites, total stations, electronic distance measurement (EDM) devices, GNSS/GPS receivers, and digital surveying equipment. Students will learn instrument setup, calibration, adjustment, operation, data collection, accuracy assessment, and error management. The course also addresses instrument maintenance, safety procedures, and the selection of appropriate equipment for different surveying applications. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Identify and describe the main types and functions of surveying instruments. Select appropriate instruments for different surveying tasks. Set up, adjust, calibrate, and operate common surveying equipment. Apply basic measurement techniques using levels, theodolites, total stations, and GNSS/GPS. Collect and record accurate surveying data. Identify common sources of instrumental and observational errors. Apply appropriate procedures to improve measurement accuracy and reliability. Demonstrate proper handling, maintenance, and safe use of surveying instruments.

Objectives

  • To provide students with a fundamental understanding of the principles, functions, and applications of surveying instruments. To introduce the main types of traditional and modern instruments used in land, engineering, geodetic, and marine surveying. To develop students’ knowledge and practical skills in the selection, setup, calibration, operation, and maintenance of surveying instruments. To examine the principles and applications of instruments such as levels, theodolites, total stations, GNSS/GPS receivers, and electronic distance measurement devices. To develop students’ ability to ensure measurement accuracy and identify common sources of instrumental and observational errors. To enable students to select and use appropriate surveying instruments for different surveying tasks and applications.
