Description

This course introduces the principles and practices of depth surveying, with emphasis on the measurement and mapping of water depths and underwater terrain. It covers hydrographic and bathymetric surveying methods, including single-beam and multi-beam echo sounders, sonar systems, GNSS/GPS positioning, and modern digital surveying technologies. Students will learn about survey planning, data acquisition, positioning, depth correction, data processing, quality control, and the preparation of bathymetric charts and maps. Applications in navigation safety, port and harbor development, dredging, coastal engineering, marine construction, and environmental monitoring are also addressed. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and importance of depth and bathymetric surveying. Identify the main instruments and technologies used for measuring water depth. Describe the principles of echo sounding and sonar-based surveying. Plan and conduct basic depth-surveying operations. Collect, process, and interpret bathymetric and hydrographic data. Apply appropriate corrections and quality-control procedures to depth measurements. Prepare and interpret basic bathymetric maps and charts. Apply depth-surveying techniques to practical marine, coastal, port, and navigation applications.

To examine the use of echo sounding, sonar systems, GNSS/GPS, and other modern technologies in depth surveying. To develop students’ ability to collect, process, analyze, and interpret depth and bathymetric data. To enable students to apply depth surveying techniques in navigation, port development, coastal engineering, marine construction, and environmental studies.
