This course introduces the fundamental principles and applications of marine geophysics. It examines the physical properties and structure of the Earth beneath the oceans and the geophysical processes responsible for the formation and evolution of ocean basins and seafloor features. Topics include seismic reflection and refraction, marine magnetics, gravity surveys, bathymetry, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling, and acoustic surveying. The course also covers data acquisition, processing, interpretation, and visualization, with applications in seafloor mapping, geological hazard assessment, offshore resource exploration, marine engineering, and environmental studies. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and importance of marine geophysics. Identify the main geophysical methods used in marine investigations. Describe the geological and geophysical processes that shape the ocean floor. Interpret basic seismic, magnetic, gravity, and acoustic data. Apply appropriate methods for seafloor and subsurface investigation. Analyze and interpret marine geophysical survey data. Assess the applications of marine geophysics in offshore resource exploration, marine engineering, and environmental studies. Apply marine geophysical knowledge to real-world marine and coastal challenges.
