This course introduces the principles and practices of cargo handling operation management in ports and terminals. It covers the handling of different types of cargo, including containerized, bulk, break-bulk, liquid, and specialized cargo. Topics include cargo-handling equipment and technologies, loading and unloading operations, storage and warehousing, terminal organization, resource allocation, operational planning, productivity measurement, safety, and environmental considerations. The course also examines the role of digitalization, automation, and modern logistics systems in improving cargo-handling efficiency and port performance. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and processes of cargo-handling operations. Identify and classify the main types of cargo and their handling requirements. Describe the equipment and technologies used in cargo-handling operations. Analyze the processes involved in loading, unloading, storage, and movement of cargo. Apply basic planning and resource-allocation methods to cargo-handling operations.
