Description

This course examines the principles and practices of managing pollution crises and developing contingency plans, with particular emphasis on marine and coastal environments. It covers the identification and assessment of pollution risks, emergency preparedness, crisis response, incident management, communication, coordination, and post-crisis recovery. The course addresses various pollution incidents, including oil spills, chemical releases, hazardous substances, and other marine pollution emergencies. Students will also examine the development and implementation of contingency plans, including roles and responsibilities, resource allocation, emergency procedures, monitoring, and evaluation. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the main principles of pollution crisis and emergency management. Identify and assess risks associated with different types of pollution incidents. Analyze the environmental, economic, and social impacts of pollution crises. Develop basic contingency and emergency response plans. Apply appropriate strategies for pollution prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Demonstrate an understanding of coordination, communication, and decision-making during environmental emergencies. Evaluate the effectiveness of contingency plans and propose improvements based on lessons learned. Apply crisis management principles to real-world marine and coastal pollution scenarios.
