Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles and applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. It covers spatial data acquisition, management, analysis, and visualization, as well as the principles of satellite and aerial remote sensing. Students will explore different types of spatial data, coordinate systems, map projections, satellite imagery, image processing, classification, and spatial analysis techniques. The course emphasizes the application of GIS and remote sensing tools in environmental monitoring, land-use and land-cover assessment, natural resource management, climate studies, and spatial planning. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and applications of GIS and Remote Sensing. Identify different types and sources of spatial and remotely sensed data. Acquire, manage, and organize geographic data using GIS tools. Interpret satellite imagery and aerial photographs. Apply basic image processing and classification techniques. Conduct spatial analysis and produce thematic maps. Use GIS and remote sensing for environmental monitoring and natural resource assessment. Apply spatial information and analysis to support planning, management, and decision-making.

Objectives

  • To provide students with a fundamental understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing principles and their applications in environmental and spatial analysis. To introduce the main concepts, data types, tools, and techniques used in GIS and remote sensing. To develop students’ ability to acquire, manage, analyze, and visualize spatial and geographic data. To introduce satellite imagery, aerial photography, and other remotely sensed data sources. To develop students’ understanding of image processing, classification, and spatial analysis techniques. To enable students to apply GIS and remote sensing tools to environmental monitoring, resource management, and decision-making.
