Description

This course introduces the principles and practices of environmental risk assessment and management. It covers the identification of environmental hazards, exposure pathways, vulnerability, risk analysis, and risk evaluation. Students will explore qualitative and quantitative methods used to assess environmental risks associated with industrial activities, development projects, pollution, natural hazards, and climate-related events. The course also examines risk management strategies, including prevention, mitigation, preparedness, emergency response, monitoring, and communication. Emphasis is placed on integrating environmental risk considerations into planning, decision-making, and sustainable development. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental concepts of environmental hazards, vulnerability, and risk. Identify potential environmental hazards and sources of risk. Apply basic qualitative and quantitative approaches to environmental risk assessment. Analyze the likelihood and potential consequences of environmental risks. Evaluate different risk prevention, mitigation, and management strategies. Develop appropriate environmental risk management and response plans. Communicate environmental risks effectively to relevant stakeholders. Apply environmental risk assessment principles to support sustainable planning and decision-making.
