This course introduces the fundamental principles and applications of coastal engineering. It examines the physical processes that shape coastal environments, including waves, tides, currents, storm surges, sediment transport, and shoreline dynamics. The course covers the planning, design, and management of coastal structures such as breakwaters, seawalls, groynes, jetties, and beach nourishment systems. It also addresses coastal erosion, flooding, climate change, sea-level rise, and sustainable approaches to coastal protection and development. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and processes relevant to coastal engineering. Analyze the effects of waves, tides, currents, and sediment transport on coastal environments. Identify major coastal engineering structures and their functions. Assess coastal erosion, flooding, and shoreline change. Evaluate different methods of coastal protection and management. Analyze the environmental impacts of coastal engineering projects. Apply sustainable and resilient approaches to the planning and management of coastal areas.
