Description

This course examines the principles of economics and sustainable management of marine resources within the context of the Blue Economy. It explores the economic value of marine resources and ecosystem services, as well as the challenges associated with their sustainable use and management. Topics include resource economics, fisheries and marine resource management, ecosystem services, cost–benefit analysis, market and non-market valuation, externalities, common-property resources, and economic instruments for environmental management. The course also addresses governance, policy development, conservation, and strategies for balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain fundamental economic concepts relevant to marine resources. Assess the economic value of marine resources and ecosystem services. Analyze the causes and consequences of overexploitation and unsustainable resource use. Apply basic economic tools to evaluate marine resource management options. Evaluate policies and economic instruments that promote sustainable resource use. Analyze the relationship between economic development, environmental protection, and marine resource conservation. Propose sustainable management strategies for the efficient and responsible use of marine resources.

To examine the economic value and importance of marine resources within the Blue Economy. To introduce the principles and approaches of sustainable marine resource management. To develop students’ ability to analyze the relationship between economic development, resource utilization, and environmental sustainability. To examine the challenges associated with overexploitation, resource depletion, pollution, and competing uses of marine resources. To enable students to evaluate policies, management strategies, and economic instruments that support the sustainable use of marine resources.
