This course explores the applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in supporting the development of the Blue Economy. It introduces fundamental concepts of AI, machine learning, data analytics, and intelligent systems, with emphasis on their use in marine and ocean-based applications. Topics include environmental monitoring, marine ecosystem assessment, fisheries and aquaculture management, maritime transport and logistics, coastal monitoring, marine spatial planning, and prediction of environmental changes. The course also addresses data availability, ethical considerations, governance, and the role of AI in promoting innovation and sustainable decision-making. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental concepts of AI and its relevance to the Blue Economy. Identify potential applications of AI in marine and ocean-based sectors. Describe the role of machine learning and data analytics in analyzing marine and environmental data. Assess how AI can support environmental monitoring, resource management, and maritime operations. Evaluate the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing AI technologies in the Blue Economy. Analyze ethical, governance, and data-related issues associated with AI applications. Propose innovative AI-based solutions to support sustainable marine and coastal development.

  • To provide students with a fundamental understanding of the relationship between the Blue Economy and Artificial Intelligence (AI). To introduce the basic concepts, methods, and applications of AI, machine learning, and data analytics in marine and ocean-based sectors. To explore the use of AI for addressing challenges related to marine resources, environmental monitoring, maritime transport, fisheries, aquaculture, and coastal management. To develop students’ ability to identify opportunities for applying AI technologies to support sustainable ocean development. To examine the ethical, technical, environmental, and governance challenges associated with the use of AI in the Blue Economy.
