Description

This course introduces the principles, processes, and applications of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). It examines approaches for organizing the use of marine and coastal spaces while balancing environmental protection, economic development, and social interests. The course covers spatial planning, stakeholder participation, ecosystem-based management, land–sea interactions, conflict resolution, governance frameworks, and decision-making processes. Particular emphasis is placed on addressing competing uses such as fisheries, aquaculture, shipping, tourism, renewable energy, conservation, and coastal development. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the principles and objectives of MSP and ICZM. Identify key marine and coastal stakeholders, activities, and potential conflicts. Analyze interactions between environmental, economic, and social factors in coastal and marine areas. Apply ecosystem-based and integrated approaches to marine and coastal management. Evaluate spatial planning and management strategies for sustainable resource use. Develop appropriate approaches for stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution. Propose sustainable planning and management solutions for real-world marine and coastal challenges.

Objectives

  • To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and importance of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). To introduce approaches for the sustainable planning, management, and use of marine and coastal spaces and resources. To develop students’ understanding of interactions and potential conflicts among different marine and coastal activities and stakeholders. To examine the environmental, economic, social, and governance dimensions of marine and coastal planning. To develop skills in stakeholder engagement, spatial analysis, decision-making, and conflict resolution. To enable students to apply integrated and ecosystem-based approaches to support sustainable coastal and marine development.
