Description

This course examines the causes, sources, types, and impacts of marine environmental pollution. It covers major marine pollutants, including oil and petroleum products, plastics and microplastics, chemical contaminants, heavy metals, nutrients, wastewater, and other hazardous substances. The course also explores the movement and fate of pollutants in marine and coastal environments, their effects on marine ecosystems and biodiversity, and their potential impacts on human health and economic activities. Emphasis is placed on pollution monitoring, risk assessment, prevention, mitigation, environmental regulations, and sustainable management strategies. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Identify and classify the major types and sources of marine pollution. Explain the transport, distribution, and fate of pollutants in marine environments. Assess the ecological, economic, and human health impacts of marine pollution. Apply basic approaches for monitoring and assessing marine environmental pollution. Evaluate pollution prevention, control, and mitigation strategies. Analyze relevant environmental regulations and management approaches for marine pollution. Propose sustainable solutions for reducing pollution and protecting marine and coastal ecosystems.
