Description

This course examines the principles, approaches, and strategies used for the conservation and restoration of aquatic environments. It covers the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and major environmental threats such as pollution, habitat degradation, climate change, overexploitation, and invasive species. The course also explores practical conservation and restoration techniques for marine, coastal, and freshwater ecosystems, including habitat rehabilitation, ecosystem-based management, biodiversity protection, and sustainable resource management. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the main principles of aquatic environment conservation and restoration. Identify major threats and pressures affecting aquatic ecosystems. Assess the ecological impacts of human activities and environmental change. Evaluate different conservation and restoration approaches and techniques. Develop appropriate strategies for the protection and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. Apply ecosystem-based and sustainable management approaches to real-world environmental challenges. Analyze the role of conservation and restoration in supporting biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, and the Sustainable Blue Economy.

Objectives

  • To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of aquatic ecosystems, their biodiversity, and the main threats affecting them. To introduce the principles and approaches of aquatic environment conservation and ecosystem restoration. To examine the impacts of pollution, habitat degradation, climate change, overexploitation, and invasive species on aquatic environments. To develop students’ knowledge of strategies and techniques used for the conservation and restoration of marine, coastal, and freshwater ecosystems. To enable students to assess environmental challenges and design appropriate conservation and restoration strategies. To promote sustainable management practices that support biodiversity conservation and the Sustainable Blue Economy.
