Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of marine ecology and marine biotechnology, with emphasis on the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems, biodiversity, species interactions, and environmental factors affecting marine life. It also explores the application of biotechnology to marine organisms and resources, including the discovery and development of bioactive compounds, pharmaceuticals, food products, biomaterials, and other innovative applications. The course highlights the importance of sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and the responsible use of marine biological resources. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and processes of marine ecology. Describe the structure, biodiversity, and functioning of major marine ecosystems. Analyze the interactions between marine organisms and their environment. Identify major applications of marine biotechnology. Evaluate the potential of marine organisms as sources of valuable biotechnological products. Assess the importance of sustainable use and conservation of marine biodiversity. Apply ecological and biotechnological knowledge to support innovation and sustainability within the Blue Economy.
