Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of oceanography and examines the relationship between the oceans and climate change. It covers major physical, chemical, geological, and biological processes occurring in the oceans, as well as ocean circulation and ocean–atmosphere interactions. Particular emphasis is placed on the impacts of climate change, including ocean warming, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, changing marine ecosystems, and extreme weather events. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the fundamental principles and major processes of oceanography. Describe the role of oceans in regulating the global climate system. Analyze interactions between the ocean and atmosphere. Assess the impacts of climate change on marine and coastal environments. Evaluate issues such as sea-level rise, ocean warming, and ocean acidification. Apply scientific knowledge to support climate adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable ocean and coastal management.

Objectives

  • To provide students with a fundamental understanding of oceanographic processes and their relationship with the Earth’s climate system. To examine the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the oceans and their role in regulating global climate. To explore the causes, impacts, and consequences of climate change on marine and coastal environments. To develop students’ understanding of ocean–atmosphere interactions, sea-level rise, ocean warming, and ocean acidification. To enable students to analyze climate-related challenges and develop approaches for adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable ocean management.
