Applications for GIS and Remote Sensing in Marine and Coastal Environments

  • Maritime Postgraduate Studies Institute |
  • English

Description

This course provides an introduction to the principles, tools, and applications of GIS and Remote Sensing in marine and coastal environments. It covers spatial data, satellite imagery, image processing, spatial analysis, and mapping techniques used to study and monitor marine and coastal areas. Applications include coastal change detection, habitat mapping, water quality monitoring, marine resource assessment, and environmental management. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the basic principles of GIS and Remote Sensing. Acquire, process, and interpret spatial and remotely sensed data. Apply GIS techniques for mapping and analyzing marine and coastal environments. Use remote sensing data to monitor environmental and coastal changes. Analyze spatial information to support decision-making in marine and coastal management. Apply appropriate GIS and Remote Sensing methods to real-world problems related to the Sustainable Blue Economy.

Program

Master of Science Degree in Sustainable Blue Economy and Management of Coastal Resources (MSc SBEM)

Objectives

  • To introduce students to the fundamental principles and applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing in marine and coastal environments. To develop practical knowledge of spatial data collection, processing, analysis, and visualization for marine and coastal applications. To explore the use of satellite imagery and other remote sensing data for monitoring coastal and marine ecosystems. To enable students to apply GIS and Remote Sensing techniques to support coastal zone management, environmental monitoring, and sustainable marine resource management. To strengthen students’ ability to analyze spatial and temporal changes in marine and coastal environments.
