Blue Resources for a Sustainable Blue Economy: Non-Living Resources

Description

This course introduces students to the main types of non-living resources found in marine and coastal environments and their role in supporting the Sustainable Blue Economy. It covers marine minerals, offshore energy resources, seawater and other ocean-based resources, as well as the technologies and methods used for their exploration and utilization. The course also addresses sustainability challenges, environmental impacts, governance, and management strategies related to the responsible use of non-living marine resources. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Identify and classify major non-living marine and ocean resources. Explain their economic importance and potential contribution to the Sustainable Blue Economy. Assess environmental impacts associated with the exploration and exploitation of these resources. Analyze challenges related to sustainable management, governance, and responsible utilization. Apply appropriate concepts and approaches to support sustainable decision-making regarding non-living blue resources.

Objectives

• To provide students with an understanding of non-living marine and ocean resources and their importance to the Sustainable Blue Economy. To examine the sustainable exploration, assessment, extraction, and management of non-living blue resources. To explore the economic, environmental, technological, and legal aspects associated with the utilization of marine mineral, energy, and other non-living resources. To develop students’ ability to assess the potential and challenges of non-living marine resources in supporting sustainable economic development. To promote awareness of environmental protection and responsible resource management in the marine and coastal environment.
