International Maritime Law and Ocean Governance

Description

This course introduces the main principles, institutions, and legal frameworks governing the use and management of oceans and seas. It covers key aspects of international maritime law, including maritime zones, jurisdiction, navigation, marine environmental protection, conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, maritime security, and international cooperation. The course also explores the concept of ocean governance and the role of international organizations, states, and other stakeholders in addressing emerging maritime challenges. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Explain the main principles and sources of international maritime law. Identify and distinguish between different maritime zones and related state jurisdictions. Analyze key international legal instruments and institutions related to ocean governance. Assess legal and governance challenges affecting the sustainable use and protection of marine and ocean resources. Apply relevant legal principles to practical maritime and ocean governance cases.

Objectives

• To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and sources of international maritime law. To examine the legal framework governing oceans, seas, maritime zones, and the rights and responsibilities of coastal and flag states. To develop knowledge of international and regional mechanisms for ocean governance and maritime cooperation. To analyze contemporary legal and governance challenges related to marine resources, environmental protection, maritime security, and sustainable ocean use. To strengthen students’ ability to apply international maritime law principles to real-world maritime and ocean governance issues.
