Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of machine design with emphasis on the design of mechanical elements under various loading conditions. Topics include stress analysis, static and fatigue failure theories, factor of safety, and the design of key machine elements such as shafts, keys, couplings, fasteners, welds, and springs. Students learn to apply material properties, stress-strain relationships, and mechanics of materials principles to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable machine design.

Objectives

  • To impart an appreciation of basic design considerations. To give the students an awareness of the factors effecting design in relation to problems in the mechanical engineering applications.
