Description

The course provides the students with the fundamentals of the control of communicable and non-communicable diseases with special emphasis on antibiotic resistance and antibiotic stewardship as well as emerging pathogens. The course also covers nutritional health, occupational medicine, and women's, children's and adolescents’ health and the relationship between the environment and public health. It is it is anticipated that students will achieve an understanding of the optimal environmental conditions for improved public health such as air, food and water purity and sanitary water disposal. The ability to understand and evaluate the biological and chemical basis for health threats emanating from the environment is also gained.

Objectives

  • By the end of the course, the students should be able to: a.1. Recognize the different terms used public health and preventive medicine. a.2. Recognize the fundamentals of prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases. a.3. Identify the problem of antibiotic resistance and emerging pathogens. a.4. Identify the fundamentals of nutritional health as well as mother's and child's health. a.5. Identify work-related hazards and the basics for their prevention and control. a.6. Recognize the different effects and hazards related to air and water pollution as well as food hazards. Intellectual Skills By the end of the course, the students should be able to: b.1. Discover the determinants of health and the different aspects of maintaining good health. b.2. Select the appropriate method of prevention and control for communicable and non-communicable diseases. b.3. Relate the appropriate selection of antibiotics to the corresponding clinical outcomes. b.4. Distinguish the optimal conditions for good nutritional health, women health and occupational health b.5. Relate the different environmental conditions to the to the health and wellbeing of the society. Professional and Practical skills By the end of the course, the students should be able to: c.1. Conclude the appropriate preventive measures of public health. c.2. Justify the application of antibiotic stewardship programs. c.3. Conclude the factors necessary for improving nutritional health, occupational health, and women's, children's and adolescents’ health. c.4. Organize the factors in the environment that affect human health. General and Transferable skills By the end of the course, the students should be able to: d.1. Implement proficiency in writing, presentation and communication skills. d.2. Practice independent learning needed for continuous professional development.
