Description
This course is designed to provide student with basic, practical and professional knowledge on pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical antimicrobial agents, with respect to the mechanism of action, spectrum of activity, applications and potential resistance patterns. (either antibiotics or non-antibiotics). Different sterilization methods and their application scope will be studied in this course.

Objectives
- By the end of the course students will be able to:
a. Knowledge and Understanding
a.1. Distinguish different antimicrobial chemotherapeutic agents, their mechanisms of action, indications, side effects, and microbial resistance.
a.2. Identify the different laboratory methods used to assess antimicrobial agents.
a.3. Define sterilization processes, their significance, limitations and their pharmaceutical and medical applications.
a.4. Identify different types of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical agents such as antiseptics, disinfectants and preservatives along with their applications and tests for their evaluation.
b. Intellectual Skills
b.1. Categorize antimicrobial agents.
b.2. Select the drug of choice for treatment of different microbial infections.
b.3. Compare advantages, disadvantages, applications and limitations of different sterilization techniques.
b.4. Differentiate between the different laboratory methods used to assess the activity of antimicrobial agent.
b.5. Interpret different microbiological laboratory test results.
c. Professional and Practical Skills
c.1. Perform tests in accordance with safety rules in a microbiology laboratory.
c.2. Operate some sterilization methods.
c.3. Apply different laboratory tests for the evaluation of anti-microbial agents qualitatively and quantitatively.
