Description

The course aims to enable students to attain the systematic approach for herbal prescribing through a comparative study of both traditional and scientifically based uses of herbal drugs in the treatment of various clinical disorders. The course provides clinical pharmacy students with review of the available information on how botanicals may normalize an altered function. Approval by World Health Organization (WHO), German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (Commission E) is the base for selection of the studied herbs. The herbal drugs treated in combined way relative to pharmacognosy, pharmacology and toxicology. Special concern is given to the possible mode of action of the herbal drugs based on experimental and clinical pharmacological studies and highlighting the merits of using biocomputational approaches and metabolomics to link chemical profile and bioactivity of herbal drugs as well as evaluate the phytoequivalency of the herbal formulations. Also, the student should understand the basis of complementary and alternative medicine with emphasis on herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, homeopathies, aromatherapy & their effect on maintaining optimum health and prevention of chronic diseases.
