1.3 Further enhance students’ skill to render longer, more complex structures from/to English/Arabic

2.1 Understand different approaches to translation. 2.2 Distinguish between different lexical choices. 2.3 Recognize the difference between Arabic and English structure. 2.4 Identify stylistic changes occurring in translation. 2.5 Decide on suitable solutions for cultural and issues in translation. 2.6 Handle translation difficulties and problems. 3. Professional and Practical skills 3.1 Identify and compare between different approaches to translation 3.2 Trace the chronological development of translation strategies 3.3 Define and compare features of source and target language 3.4 Construct a lexicon on their own that includes the glossary that they have been using. 3.5 Apply information to differentiate between English / Arabic texts 3.6 Use stylistic features specific to English/ Arabic 4. General and Transferable skills 4.1 Discriminate between source and target language in terms of lexical and syntactic difficulties 4.2 Use idioms in the source and target language, stressing the importance of the cultural paradigm 4.3 Demonstrate their use of the accurate structures in translating English-Arabic texts and vice versa. 4.4 Apply all learned principles to improve their translation process.

Language and Translation Department

Objectives

  • This course is aimed at teaching students to translate different types of longer more sophisticated texts from Arabic into English and vice versa. Students will also be further trained on how to take into account the linguistic, inter-lingual and intercultural differences between Arabic and English. The course throws light on the concept of multimodality and the interplay between verbal and non-verbal semiotics in translation. It introduces students to the issues related to gender, language and translation. It also aims to improve students’ awareness and understanding of gender as an essential aspect of social, historical and cultural formation, and on this basis explore the development and the limitations of feminist translation theory.
