Scientific writing (1 hr Lecture+1 hr Tutorial)

Description

This course is designed to introduce students to the principles of good scientific writing, to be familiar with basic structure of scientific reports and research articles. It covers methods of paraphrasing, common mistakes in scientific writing, different writing styles, how to write a scientific report, proposal and manuscript, appropriate use of tables and figures in data presentation and evaluation of literature and information sources.

Describe various writing styles and their differences. a.3. Explain the steps in creating different professional scientific forms as journal articles, presentations, pharmaceutical procedures, patient charts or manufacturing logs. a.4. Describe techniques for creating an abstract for an article. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Make conclusions via critical analysis of evidence-based information. b.2. Effectively use data and scientific principles to support rational conclusions and defend them in the discussion part of a research presentation. b.3. Comment critically on research presentations & provide constructive ideas to presenters in a self-confident manner. b.4. Propose an update to an existing drug brochure with emphasis on new emerging data. c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Collect data from evidence-based resources. c.2. Apply the principles of good scientific writing in presenting essay containing abstract, introduction, results, discussion, conclusions, figures, tables and references. c.3. Evaluate collected medical information. c.4. Determine what an article proposal consists of and why it is used. c.5. Realize the need for continued practice to develop good writing skills. d. General and Transferable Skills d.1. Adhere to ethics in academic reporting by avoiding plagiarism while writing scientific report. d.2. Present the topics and results of their own researches in an organized and rational manner.
