Management of special patient populations (2 hrs lecture )

Description

This course is a part of “Patient Care Cluster IV”. It aims at training the student to tailor the dose regimen according to the case in hand. The special patient population include patients with cardiovascular diseases, renal failure, hepatic failure, autoimmune diseases, pregnant and lactating women, infants, geriatrics. A special emphasis will also be given to Pharmacogenomics and how genes affect a person's response to drugs to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person's genetic makeup. The course also prepares the pharmacist to communicate with such populations and assess their needs.

Recognize basis of genomic and different biochemical pathways regarding their correlation with different diseases a.3. List the drugs that can be safely used in pregnancy and lactation a.4. Describe methods of evaluating kidney, liver and cardiovascular function a.5. Estimate by calculation the dose of drugs for pediatric and geriatric patients. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Examine the basic factors affecting drug dose and drug choice b.2. Judge self-treating patients and solve problems related to self-medication b.3. Analyze and appraise the results of the care. b.4. Examine drug interactions, adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and pharmacovigilance principles. b.5. Modify the dose of a drug in special patient population c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Detect the proper drug class for renal and liver disease patients c.2. Plan for changing the patient's health behavior which is related to condition c.3. Predict the weakness points that may hinder the patient to follow the care plan, and propose interventions. c.4. Prepare document to each patient’s healthcare data d.
