Description
This course introduces students to the scientific study of human language, using examples from a variety of world languages. The course provides students with an overview of the fundamentals of linguistics, with a focus on the nature of language and introduction to sound system, word formation, sentence structure, and meaning. The course also introduces the concepts of pragmatics, discourse analysis, as well as regional and social language variation and language planning. By the end of this course, students should be able to use accepted linguistic terminology when describing languages
