Objectives

  • This course is an introduction the student to the history and the development of oil painting techniques from ancient times to the Modern Period. This course will focus on the study of the types and origins of the various technical schools of conservation, especially those dating back to the Renaissance Period. Furthermore, the course will focus on the most famous techniques of the world's most famous artists, then study the materials and tools which were used in oil painting. This course also introduces the knowledge of the various deterioration factors of oil paintings such as physical, chemical, and biological deterioration factors in addition to the defects of the industry, as well as figuring out the methods of modern examination and analysis of oil paintings. The students will learn how to develop a complete plan for the restoration and conservation of oil paintings starting from the stages of examination and analysis until the museum display and storage taking into consideration requirements of preventive conservation practices used and the upkeep of the materials and tools used in restoration and conservation works.
