Through knowledge and understanding, students will be able to: • Comprehend the African chronology and different historical periods • Distinguish the distinct phases of historical and archaeological development of Africa • Appreciate the cultural diversity of ancient Africa • Name the different scripts and languages of Africa with their different families • Recognise the importance of Africa in the Ancient World. Through intellectual skills, students will be able to: • Comprehend short readings in the field of African Archaeology • Discern what is fictional information and what is scientific information about ancient Africa • Be able to conduct small research studies that can be submitted as Wikipedia entry • Use library sources effectively Through professional and practical skills, students will be able to: • Navigate to unknown archaeological sites and know how to use google maps to locate sites • Write well-researched entries for Wikipedia • Give a 10-minute presentation on a topic of choice in African archaeology • Observe and write down observations in a reflective journal Through general and transferable skills, students will be able to: • Give correct information on the subject matter • Work with colleagues on a presentation and understand team work dynamics • Discover the areas around him and encourage learning curiosity

Objectives

  • This course aims at giving students and introduction to a complex evolving rare discipline. African archaeology now is an important part of the studying of the global archaeological studies. Africa provides archaeologists with the oldest material for interpretation as it is recognized now as the origin of modern humans and their cultural production. This course will provide also a study of later periods to understand the development of African culture and society. In addition, it will also focus on the interpretation of the archaeological record to better understand the ancient world. The course starts with pre-history until the age of European colonization chronologically and from the Mediterranean to South African geographically.
