Description

By the end of this course, learners will be able to: 1. identify and use different approaches to teaching English; 2. understand and apply the principles of English language teaching; 3. use a variety of teaching techniques; 4. teach the four language skills in addition to vocabulary and grammar in an ESP context; 5. write well-developed and well-structured lesson plans; 6. demonstrate the ability to use different classroom management techniques; and 7. identify different learning styles and use various activities to cater for each style.

Objectives

  • This course aims at developing an understanding of the principles of teaching English in an ESP context. By examining different contexts, purposes and approaches, students will be enabled to make informed decisions about language teaching methods, techniques, syllabuses and material. This course will look at the development of major teaching styles or methods in ESP, and will deal with teaching the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. It will also consider the teaching of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation as well as the correction of errors, lesson planning, and classroom management. Additional topics include the role of teaching materials, testing and the teaching of younger learners.
