This course will explore the role of religion in politics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It will cover a broad range of contemporary political events including the Arab Spring, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Syrian uprising. Special attention will be paid to the roles religious practice and belief play in these events through an examination of religious actors as manifested in transnational Islamic movements, religious advocacy groups, and faith-based non-governmental organizations. By the end of the course students should be able to think critically about religion and politics in the MENA region and present a clear and cogent argument (through a research paper) on a related theme.
