Description
This course builds on the early concepts of physical and chemical phenomena and the details of formulation of the
different dosage forms to introduce the students to the various technologies utilized in drug manufacturing. In this
course, the design of equipment used for the basic processes of mixing, size reduction, emulsification, and
centrifugation are reviewed. The students are introduced to these concepts hands on through several activities in a
simulated pilot drug manufacturing plant.

- Knowledge and Understanding
a.1. Illustrate the work sectors in the field of pharmaceutical industry.
a.2. Define mixing, size reduction, emulsification, and centrifugation in order to understand their application in the
manufacture of different dosage forms.
a.3. Illustrate the various equipment (batch and continuous) used in their application.
a.4. Enumerate the various factors affecting their selection and their effect on dosage form stability.

By the end of the course the student should be able to:
b.1. Deduce the methods and techniques that could be applied to prepare different dosage forms using mixing, size
reduction, emulsification, and centrifugation.
b.2. Differentiate between the different types of equipment (batch and continuous) and the suitability of each type to
various dosage forms.
