Description

This course reviews the commonly available herbal products originating from different plant organs such as herbs, fruits and subterranean organs. The course focuses on the knowledge regarding the proper sources, storage, and preparation conditions. A corner stone of this course will be the detailed study of toxic, poisonous, hallucinating and addicting herbs including morphological aspects and various constituents. Herbal mixtures and marine life derived drugs are covered as well.

  • a. Knowledge and Understanding a.1. Identify drugs in the whole state and in powdered condition with suitable examples of medicinal plants. a.2. Recognize the different natural sources of active constituents, their pharmacological actions and therapeutic uses. a.3. List narcotic and toxic medicinal plants. a.4. Distinguish herbal remedies and multi-herbal mixtures, their safety, shortcomings, and how to detect possible adulterants. a.5. Recognize natural materials from marine organisms as therapeutic agents. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Examine the various products of natural origin used by the public in self-treatment of diseases, regarding their safety and efficacy. b.2. Revise the occurrences of side effects of Herbal products for which a patient may seek medical advice. b.3. Conclude the role of the pharmacist in the use of herbal medicine and other natural products. c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Apply skills in identifying medicinal drugs of natural origin and judge their purity. c.2. connect all theoretical and practical information to design new medicinal drugs of plant origin. c.3.
