Description

This course is a part of the “Patient Care Cluster I” dealing with the characteristics and use of drugs intended for gastrointestinal, urogenital, and skeletal disorders. A problem-based learning approach is intended for this course. Through a series of simulated patient cases, this course trains the students to integrate pharmacotherapeutic, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and social and inter-personal knowledge and skills to offer patient-centered care. At this early exposure level, students will be provided with cases representing patients with simple disorders and needs.

Objectives

  • a. Knowledge and Understanding a.1. Record data pertinent to the patient condition including laboratory results and medical history a.2. Recognize the pathophysiology and the therapeutic objectives for gastrointestinal, urogenital, and skeletal disorders as they pertain to a particular patient situation a.3. Outline the profile of a patient's drugs, including therapeutic uses, dosing regimens, contraindications, adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and clinically significant drug interactions. a.4. Define the potentially drug – induced acute emergencies including overdose & toxicity along with the accompanied clinical picture and life support measures. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Revise the results of laboratory investigations, diagnostic workup and the findings of physical assessment to outline the whole clinical picture and its associated drug therapy. b.2. Classify the patient therapeutic objectives through determining both subjective and objective measurable goals. b.3. Select the patient's therapeutic plan in collaboration with other health care providers to assess the effectiveness and monitoring of the drug therapy, with taking the appropriate intervention if needed. c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Apply the interventions predetermined in the pharmacotherapeutic plan in collaboration with the treating team. c.2. Detect the relevance, accuracy, and completeness of the collected data in relation to the patient’s disease condition c.3. Apply different patterns of communication to advise patients and other health care professionals about safe and proper use of medicines c.4. Organize the patient data and findings of different assessments, in patient's record file to be the reference about the medical history for that patient d. General and Transferable Skills d.1. Improve cooperation with other health team professionals focusing on the preventative approach of disease occurrence through counseling & education procedures. d.2. Communicate with other health care professionals as appropriate to adjust the patient care plan. d.3. Practice independent learning needed for continuous professional development. d.4. Follow codes of ethics and ethical principles in decision-making process, manage situations of conflict of interest and patient confidentiality.
