Description

This is an academic writing course for College English learners. The course enhances communication skill in English language by non-native English speakers. Weekly lectures for one semester provide an overview of the speech s necessary for effective oral communication by pharmacists in their professional settings using English language. The course teaches writing in a straightforward manner, using a step‐by‐step approach. Clear models and varied practice helps to develop confidence and style in writing. The course enhances the abilities of the Pharmacy student to answer essay type questions in exams using simple correct English linguistic structure. The course also aims at improving the students’ medical vocabulary and pronunciation with an emphasis in building fluency for patient/professional interactions.

Objectives

  • By the end of the course students will be able to: a. Knowledge and Understanding a.1. Use professional vocabulary relevant to pharmacy practice meaningfully and accurately. a.2. Apply word-formation rules of pre-fixation, suffixation and compounding. a.3. Apply the stages of the writing process effectively. a.4. Write well-structured, unified and coherent paragraphs. a.5. Write academic essays and employment correspondence. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Present a topic in clear simple English language using appropriate presentation methods. b.2. Discuss a topic (that he/she chooses) with his/her colleagues in clear simple English language. b.3. Summarize English scientific medical articles. b.4. Communicate orally in English language using correct simple English medical terms. b.5. Write an essay in correct English language in the field of medicine. c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Read English clearly, with special emphasis on medical vocabulary. c.2. Listen to medical English dialogue and answer simple questions related to that dialogue. c.3. Gather information from the patient’s health records written in English language. d. General and Transferable Skills d.1. Speak English clearly to communicate with other health professionals who do not speak Arabic as first language. d.2. Seek guidance when uncertain about own knowledge concerning the meaning of medical scientific text in English through correct use of medical dictionaries.
