Description

Identify the various music genres. Distinguish the meaning of different musical terms. Recognize and identify musical examples within the Western and Arab traditions. Relate different forms of music to their historical context. Recognize some elements that belong to certain styles of music. Review the technological changes to how music is made and listened to. Identify characteristics of music and comment on how and why music is related to different identities. Analyze and evaluate music in relation to its historical, cultural, and social circumstances. Compare different music genres using precise analytical vocabulary. Assess the ways in which audiences, fans, and communities contribute to the formation of popular music. Listen critically to musical examples and distinguish the characteristics that differentiate various styles and genres. Analyze fundamental characteristics of both Western and Arab music. Examine representative works of Western and Arab music and distinguish the composers who produced them. Enhance their powers of aural perception through exposure to various music styles. Develop an awareness of the similarities and differences that make up the music of cultural identity both locally and globally. Utilize library and online resources and relevant research tools to retrieve primary and secondary sources. Generate and present critical work about music employing relevant research skills. Objectives

  • This course aims at developing students’ musical perception, understanding, and appreciation. It also introduces students to the study of music, including a variety of musical styles and genres, spanning over different historical periods until the present. Through attentive listening and critical thinking, students will develop the ability to analyze various musical forms and communicate effectively about the role of music in human societies.
