Description

This course aims to introduce and develop a critical understanding of the concepts, theories and roles and functions of human resource management (HRM) in any organization. HRM is associated with people-related activities to business strategy. This course highlights the need for HRM in organizations and provides students with a comprehensive review of key HRM concepts, techniques and issues. Topics include human resource development, job analysis and design, recruitment and selection, evaluation, performance management, occupational health and safety, employee development and training, fairness concerns and the strategic contribution of HRM to organisational performance and evaluating HRM effectiveness. Working with contemporary case studies, students not only engage in collaborative and individual work processes but use communication and discourse characteristic of the HRM context and environment.

Objectives

  • Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:  Apply the appropriate theoretical models in HRM discussions and debates.  Comprehend the HR functions, roles and theories and the strategic HRM.  Develop the knowledge, skills and concepts needed to resolve actual human resource management problems or issues.  Manage the employment relationship, which is a shared responsibility between employers, management, human resources specialists, and employees.  Identify the human resources needs of an organization or department.  Conduct a job analysis and produce a job description from the job analysis .  Evaluate the procedures and practices used for recruiting and selecting suitable employees .  Assess training requirements and design a successful orientation and training program .  Discuss workplace health and safety programs and the roles of the employer and the employee in enforcing health and safety policies and procedures .  Analyse human resource planning and forecasting techniques.  Create employee performance management and rewards systems.  Illustrate the essential features of a human resource information system.
