Description

By the end of this course, students should be able to: • Create a written transcript in source language for any dialogue. • Produce condensed structures in target language. • Use idiomatic expressions in script translation where appropriate. • Use colloquial expressions in script translation. • Find equivalent proverbs in target language. • Make use of transadaptation strategies where appropriate. • Cut sentences properly within the available blocks in any subtitling software. • Demonstrate awareness of the basics of revoicing and digitalization in subtitling. • Identify key features in any subtitling software. • Apply all the subtitling rules to translate different audio files from scratch.

Objectives

  • This course is aimed at introducing students into translating scripts, using the different script translation strategies with reference to the existing practices in the market. The course will cover the subtitling strategies on the technical, linguistic and cultural levels. Subtitling techniques such as condensation, transcription and transadaptation will be tackled. Students will also get acquainted with the influence of technological advances (subtitling software and the internet) on the subtitler's practice.
