Toward a Green and Sustainable Future School Initiative Finals

The completion of the third phase of the Sustainable Development Initiative for Alexandria's schools' students and teachers at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the main headquarters of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport was a major event! In line with the college's commitment to serving the community and achieving sustainable development goals, the college hosted the closing ceremony on Thursday, November 16, 2023, marking the conclusion of the third and final stage of the inaugural edition of the "Toward a Green and Sustainable Future School Initiative."

This initiative, under the patronage of His Excellency Professor Dr. Ismail Abdelghaffar Ismail Farag, President of the Academy, is the first of its kind among Egyptian schools and universities. It was executed by the members of the Sustainable Development Committee at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport, along with several schools in Alexandria.

The third and final stage of this initiative concluded at 10:00 AM. Professor Dr. Alaa Abdelbari, Vice President of the Academy for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, also the conference rapporteur, conveyed the greetings and best wishes of His Excellency Professor Dr. Ismail Abdelghaffar Ismail Farag, the President of the Academy, for the success of the initiative. He also presented the Academy's strategic plan for scientific research, research projects, and its extension to pre-university education.

Professor Dr. Yasser Gaber, Dean of Scientific Research and Innovation and Chair of the Sustainability Committee at the Academy, elaborated on the initiative's details. It spanned a year starting from September 2022, comprising three stages: awareness sessions for students and teachers about sustainable development goals, reciprocal visits between participating schools and the Academy, involving physical visits and online interactions. This was followed by implementing innovative ideas from students and guiding them through development, concluding with a competition among the projects and innovative ideas presented by students.

Seven schools from Alexandria participated in the inaugural edition of the initiative, resulting in a total of 13 projects and innovative ideas from students of five schools: Royalty, Nile, Harvard, Egyptian American, and the Technical Secondary School for Drinking Water and Sanitation.

Dr. Heba Shaaban, a professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, highlighted the activities, projects, initiatives, and competitions carried out by the college for school students. She encouraged students to continue pursuing their innovative dreams and participate in upcoming editions with more advanced ideas and involvement in events and competitions organized by the college and the Arab Academy.

The event also featured a quiz on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for students, and representatives of participating schools and students were honored. Besides the participating students and their supervisors, the event was attended by several representatives from participating schools, parents, students from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, as well as various professors and members of the Academy's Sustainable Development Committee, including Dr. Mostafa Abdelgalil, Dr. Kareem Tanbal, Dr. Rania Rajeh, Dr. Aminah Darwish, Dr. Mohamed El Sokkary, and Dr. Mohamed Youssef. Also, several individuals participated in various stages of the initiative, including Dr. Nahla Zaghzouk, Dr. Rania Asem, Dr. Aminah Attallah, Dr. Salma El Mallah, Raja Ahmed, Zeinab Ali, Basma Mahmoud, Eileen Emad.
