… The Arab Academy and UNHCR Join Forces to Empower Refugees Through Education

“Bridge of Hope” — An initiative that grants refugees a “passport” to the future

The Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched today, Monday, a joint initiative titled “Bridge of Hope” aimed at empowering refugees through education.

Under this initiative, the Arab Academy and UNHCR will collaborate to provide scholarship opportunities for refugees to obtain a bachelor’s degree. The Academy is committed to offering higher education in line with international standards of learning, research, and innovation—recognizing the power and impact of education in building a better future.

The initiative reflects the commitment of both the Academy and UNHCR to enhancing the values of humanity and solidarity, creating inclusive learning environments, and facilitating sustainable solutions that enable refugees to build a brighter future through education.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Consul General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Alexandria, Mr. Mazeed bin Mohammed Al-Huwaishan; representatives from the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission; UNHCR’s Regional Office in Cairo; the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation; the Embassy of Italy in Cairo; the French Development Agency in North Africa; the European Union project team; the Egyptian Red Crescent; the Regional Migration and Protection Programme; the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation; and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The Academy’s refugee scholarship program seeks to achieve several key goals, including:

  • Enhancing self-reliance and enabling durable solutions by providing refugees with access to quality education.

  • Empowering young men and women equally with the knowledge, skills, and leadership needed to contribute to their communities.

  • Promoting diversity and inclusion within the Academy’s community.

  • Advancing social and economic equality and gender equality.

  • Supporting peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction in refugees’ countries of origin.
