Objectives

  • To provide a survey of Egyptian art from the predynastic period to the contemporary period, highlighting all main phases in between, including Graeco-Roman and Late Antique art, early Islamic, Mamluk, Ottoman, and the main 19th and 20th century trends and styles. The course aims at introducing the students to the most eminent Egyptian artists and art works, providing an account for historical, socio-cultural elements that influenced art theory and practice in Egypt. It also aims at introducing students to different methodologies in the study of the history of art while engaging them in different activities.
