Description

This course provides an introduction to information systems. Topics of interest include definitions of Information Systems, functions of information systems, major business functions, types of information systems, the role of information in management problem solving, the role of Information Systems in firms' competitive advantages, internet business models, and E-commerce, it also deals with the factors influence the adoption of inter-organizational systems, the benefits and disadvantages of the virtual office and the virtual organization, the benefits and risks of end-user computing, database management systems.

Objectives

  • - Overview of the five basic areas of information system knowledge needed by business professionals, including the conceptual system components and major types of information systems.
    - Introduce fundamental concepts of competitive advantage through informationtechnology.
    - Review history, trends, and developments in microcomputer, midrange, and mainframe computer systems; basic computer system concepts; and the major types of technologies.
    - Review the basic features and trends in the major types of application software and system software used to support enterprise and end-user computing.
    - Introduce key database management concepts and applications in business information systems.
    - Present an overview of the Internet and other telecommunication networks, business applications, and trends and reviews technical telecommunications alternatives.
    - Understand the role of e-business, e-commerce, and decision support systems.
