Description:
The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) Alexandria Campus implements a comprehensive suite of transportation initiatives designed to reduce the use of private vehicles both within and around the campus.
These strategic measures aim to minimize traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, promote sustainable mobility, and create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly environment for the entire university community. Through a holistic approach that integrates infrastructure development, service provision, and policy implementation, AASTMT has successfully established a multi-modal transportation ecosystem that encourages students, faculty, and staff to adopt greener travel behaviors.
Transportation Initiatives
AASTMT currently implements five (5) distinct transportation initiatives to decrease private vehicle usage on campus:
1. Campus Shuttle Bus System
AASTMT operates a modern fleet of air-conditioned buses that provide reliable and comfortable transportation for students and staff between the Abu Qir Campus and Miami Campus, with scheduled hourly trips throughout the day. In addition to this core route, the shuttle network has been expanded to include connections to various residential areas across Alexandria—stretching from Abu Qir to Agamy—significantly reducing the need for private cars and other personal transportation methods. This service not only eases traffic congestion around campus entrances but also offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly commuting alternative for the university community.
2. Inter-Campus Transportation
The university provides organized and efficient transportation services connecting its multiple campuses and facilities across Alexandria. This inter-campus network ensures that students and staff can move seamlessly between academic sites without relying on private vehicles. By offering coordinated schedules and dedicated routes, AASTMT facilitates access to diverse academic programs, research facilities, and administrative services while minimizing the environmental impact of inter-campus travel.
3. Pedestrian-Friendly Campus Design
AASTMT has deliberately designed the Abu Qir Campus to promote walking as a primary mode of internal transportation. The campus features:
This thoughtful spatial planning significantly reduces the need for short-distance vehicle use inside the campus, encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle while minimizing traffic and emissions within the academic environment.
4. Student Accommodation on Campus
AASTMT provides on-campus student dormitories and accommodation within the Abu Qir Campus, enabling students to reside in close proximity to their classes, libraries, dining facilities, and recreational amenities. By offering comfortable, affordable, and conveniently located housing, the university enables students to access all campus services on foot, dramatically reducing their dependence on private vehicles for daily commutes. This initiative is particularly effective in decreasing the number of vehicles entering campus during peak morning and evening hours.

5. Integrated Transport and Travel Planning Policy
AASTMT has formally adopted a comprehensive Integrated Transport and Travel Planning Policy that provides a strategic framework for reducing vehicle dependency across all campuses. This policy encompasses:
The policy serves as a guiding document for all transportation-related decisions, ensuring that sustainability remains at the forefront of campus development and operational planning.
Additional Supportive Measures
Beyond the five primary initiatives, AASTMT has implemented complementary measures that further reinforce the reduction of private vehicle usage:
Alignment with Sustainability Goals
These five transportation initiatives demonstrate AASTMT's comprehensive commitment to sustainability and directly support:
With five structured initiatives actively in place—supported by additional complementary measures—AASTMT has created a robust, multi-layered approach to reducing private vehicle dependency on campus. These initiatives collectively contribute to safer, cleaner, and more sustainable campus environments, while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among students, faculty, and staff. By continuing to expand and refine these programs, AASTMT reinforces its position as a leader in sustainable campus transportation and environmental stewardship in Egypt and beyond.
